A prompt. A little time. Your eye.

Find something worth shooting.

Out of ideas? One Roll hands you a phrase, or a handful of words, and a bit of time. What you point the camera at, and how you frame it, is entirely up to you.

Why it exists

For the days you run out of things to shoot.

Between the school run, the weekend match and the next trip, most of us photograph whatever is put in front of us. Then comes a lull: the camera is in your hand and nothing seems worth taking.

One Roll is made for that moment. It doesn’t tell you what a good photograph looks like. It gives you a place to start, and gets out of the way.

  • At home on the weekend
  • Out for a walk
  • Traveling on a train
  • Anywhere there’s light
An assignment: Photograph people gathered around a table during a shared meal, with a list of twelve words.

Two ways to start

A phrase. Or a handful of words.

Assignment

A phrase to carry with you.

One brief, at your own pace. The time limit is only a suggestion, or choose no limit and take it for a walk. It never ends your roll for you.

Challenge

Words, and a clock.

A word for every frame, and a timer that ends the roll. Ask for a hint if you want one, or leave it off and keep it fair.

rust · glass · candle · doorway · puddle

You decide the subject. You decide the composition. One Roll only gives you a reason to look.

Want it to start from what’s around you? Type a keyword, or point your camera at the scene, and the roll is built around it. Want a technical twist? Let it set a lens, an aperture or a shutter speed too.

An assignment in progress: a clock, “0 of 12 words”, the word “face” and a Show hint button.

Why a clock

A little time makes you look.

The clock isn’t the point. It’s the push. With a few minutes and a word in mind, you stop deliberating and start noticing: the light on a doorway, a reflection in a puddle, the shape of a shadow across the street.

Seeing quickly is a skill, and like any skill it grows with practice. Work to a limit, again and again, and you get better at finding pictures in the world around you, wherever you are.

Make your own

Make a challenge. Send it anywhere.

Anyone can write a roll and share it: a photographer with a blog, a creator with a following, or an enthusiast who simply wants others to see the world the way they do. Choose the words and the time, send it out, and see what comes back.

Whoever opens it can try it, even without the app. When they finish, they share what they made and how long it took, so everyone can see the different ways the same words get photographed.
